Alcester & Ragley 1st (211-6) beat Overbury (200-7) by 11 runs

Ragley came through to win a tight game after they were asked to bat first in damp conditions after a big downpour just as the game was about to commence. The Overbury opening bowlers Brookes and Davies made the most of the conditions to keep the score to only 16 from the first 10 overs, crucially though no wickets were taken in this period. The next 10 overs continued in the same vein as Ragley reached 53-1 after 20 overs, Mike Bennett the batsman to go for 11. Ben Lee and Michael Coombs added 50 for the second wicket and were just starting increase the run rate when Lee was caught for 36, Coombs followed in the next over for 29. Lewis Clark and Gary Strain continued the acceleration and they added 40 runs in good time until Clark was bowled for 20 and Strain was forced to retire at the same score. With the score on 120-4 from 30 overs the game was in the balance and the pitch conditions seemed to be easing all the time so it was imperative that Ragley posted a decent score to defend. This was achieved as captain Adam Warbrick batted fluently from the off to hoist the score over 200 as he finished with 63 not out with 8 fours and a six. The most successful Overbury bowlers were Alridge 2-26 and Baldwin 2-46 although Davies bowled well without reward as he finished with 0-23 from his 10 overs.

Overbury’s innings mirrored Ragley’s although they managed to score even more slowly early on as the openers Goodwin and Munro limped to 10-0 from the first 10 overs, Woolley and Reader bowling superbly early on without any luck. The opening batsmen then saw off the next 10 overs with no real alarms and also bought up the 50 in the 20th over. At this stage Overbury began to accelerate which they needed to do and with 10 wickets still in hand they had the licence to do so. Ragley were starting to look down the barrel as the score reached 90 for no loss when a moment of brilliance in the field from Mike Bennett ran out Goodwin for 40 with a direct hit leaving him well short. Opening partner Munro was then superbly caught by the same Bennett in the covers from his brother, Arthurs’, bowling 2 overs later to put Ragley right back in the game. Arthur Bennett was bowling a superb spell and in partnership with Warbrick put the pressure right back onto Overbury as they reached 150-3 from 39overs, requiring 62 from the final 6 overs. Ragley reintroduced Woolley at this stage who had bowled 7 overs for only 6 runs and he struck straight away as he bowled Aldridge for 31. This relieved the pressure on Ragley and Overbury required 48 from the final 4 overs. However the 42nd over went for 16 runs to bring Overbury back in the picture as Maiznnier hammered 3 boundaries in the over. Woolley stopped him in his tracks as he bowled him with the first ball of the 43rd over and then conceded only 3 runs from the rest of the over. Warbrick claimed the wicket of his opposite captain Brookes in the 44th over for 17 as Strain kept wicket through the pain and was rewarded with 2 stumpings. Woolley bowled the final over with Overbury requiring 22 to win with 3 wickets left. They managed 9 runs to lift them up to the final batting point as they finished on 200-7. Woolley finished with match winning figures of 2-23 from 10 overs, Warbrick 2-42 and Bennett 2-40 as Ragley won a see saw game by 11 runs.
